Ashwagandha
🌿 Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera)
📖 Overview
Ashwagandha, often referred to as "Indian ginseng," is one of the most revered adaptogens in Ayurveda. The name Ashwagandha comes from the Sanskrit words ashva (horse) and gandha (smell), indicating its traditional use to support vitality and strength.
📜 Traditional Use in Ayurveda
In Ayurvedic medicine, Ashwagandha is classified as a Rasayana—an herb that supports longevity, resilience, and rejuvenation. It is primarily used to support the nervous system, reproductive health, and healthy sleep.
Charaka Samhita (Chikitsa Sthana 1.1.49–50):
“Balya sthairyakarinyashcha vayasthapanani cha… Ashwagandha rasayanani cha”
“Ashwagandha is a Rasayana that enhances strength and vitality, and promotes youthfulness.”
Traditionally, Ashwagandha is known to balance Vata and Kapha doshas and is often used for calming the mind and strengthening the body.
