🌿  (Bacopa monnieri)

📖 Overview

Bacopa monnieri, commonly known as Brahmi, is a small, succulent herb traditionally used in Ayurveda to support memory, mental clarity, and nervous system function. It thrives in wetlands and is often used in Rasayana formulations for brain and cognitive health.

📜 Traditional Use in Ayurveda

In classical Ayurveda, Brahmi is revered as a Medhya Rasayana, a rejuvenating herb that promotes intellect and mental acuity. It is said to nourish Majja Dhatu (nervous tissue) and enhance memory and focus.

Charaka Samhita (Chikitsa Sthana 1.3.30):
“Medhyam brahmi balam ayushyam”
“Brahmi enhances intellect, strength, and longevity.”

Bhavaprakasha Nighantu (Guduchyadi Varga, Verse 189):
“Brahmi tikta kashaya sheeta medhya tridoshaghni”
“Brahmi is bitter, astringent, cooling, promotes intellect, and balances all three doshas.”

It is traditionally used in children for learning support and in the elderly for promoting calm focus and restful sleep.

🍵 Suggested Use

Brahmi is available in various forms:

  • Churna (powder): 1–3 grams daily with warm water or ghee

  • Decoction or infusion: Taken with milk or water

  • Capsules and tablets: Often standardized to active bacoside content

Often used alongside herbs like Ashwagandha or Shankhpushpi for synergistic nervous system support.
