Licorice
🌿 (Glycyrrhiza glabra) or YashtiMadhu
Also known as Madhuka
📖 Overview
Licorice root, or Yashtimadhu, is one of Ayurveda’s most widely used and versatile herbs. Its sweet, demulcent nature is traditionally used to soothe the digestive tract, support the respiratory system, and calm inflammation. In Sanskrit, Yashtimadhu means “sweet root.”
📜 Traditional Use in Ayurveda
Licorice is classified as Vishaghna (detoxifier), Shothahara (anti-inflammatory), and Kantya (beneficial for the throat). It is considered a Rasayana that nourishes the mucous membranes, strengthens immunity, and balances Vata and Pitta.
Charaka Samhita (Chikitsa Sthana 1.3.32):
“Yashtimadhu rasayanam kantya chakshushya balya”
“Yashtimadhu is rejuvenating, strengthens the voice, supports vision, and nourishes strength.”
Bhavaprakasha Nighantu (Guduchyadi Varga, Verse 191):
“Madhuka madhura sheeta snigdha kantya vishaghna raktapittahara”
“Licorice is sweet, cooling, demulcent, soothing to the throat, detoxifying, and balances blood heat (Pitta).”
